[💂 Saving Private Simon - Episode #006] The Question Behind the Question

"Real Stories. Real Conversations. Real Lessons."

Every recruiter has stories. These are mine.

Real conversations with candidates, clients, and hiring managers shared with identities changed, but lessons preserved.

🙋 A Few Questions We Hear All the Time

This week, I thought we'd take a little break from the serious side of hiring.

No complicated hiring strategies.

No deep career lessons.

Just a few questions candidates often ask, and what recruiters sometimes hear behind them. 😄

And that's perfectly normal.

Especially when you're considering leaving a perfectly decent job to join a company you've only known through LinkedIn, a recruiter, and a very enthusiastic PowerPoint presentation.

Sometimes, there is a second question hiding underneath the first one.

And yes, recruiters notice.

💬 What They Ask vs. What They Really Mean

Candidate's

Question

What They Really Mean

in Korean

What They Really Mean

in English

“Why did the previous person leave?”

전임자가 왜 나갔죠? 혹시 저도 그렇게 되는 건 아니죠?

“Why did the previous person run away?”

“How long has this position been open?”

왜 아직까지 사람을

못 구했죠?

“Why has nobody taken this job yet?”

“How would you describe the hiring manager?”

제 미래의 상사는 어떤

사람인가요?

“Is my future boss going to ruin my life?”

“How much autonomy does the Korea team have?”

제가 실제로 한국 사업을

결정할 수 있나요?

“Do I actually run Korea, or do I just forward emails from Singapore?”

“How involved is the regional office?”

본사나 지역본부에서

얼마나 간섭하나요?

“Will they support me, or tell me what to do every Tuesday?”

“Is Korea an important market for the company?”

한국에 진짜 투자할 생각이

있는 건가요?

“Are you actually serious about Korea?”

“What does success look like in the first year?”

처음부터 무리한 목표를

주는 건 아니죠?

“What impossible target am I signing up for?”

“What is the company culture like?”

제발 ‘fast-paced and collaborative’ 말고

진짜 얘기를 해주세요.

“Please don't give me the corporate answer.”

“How flexible is the working arrangement?”

그래서 일주일에 며칠

출근해야 하죠?

“How many days do I actually have to come to the office?”

“How big is the team?”

저한테 실제로 사람이

몇 명 붙나요?

“Am I going to have a team, or am I going to be the team?”

Of course, candidates don't literally mean all of these things.

Usually.

But there is often a concern behind the question.

🕵️ The Recruiter Translation Service

Think of recruiters as having an unofficial translation service.

Not Korean to English.

Not English to Korean.

Candidate to Reality.

Candidates don't always ask the uncomfortable question directly. Sometimes they soften it, especially when they're speaking with a potential employer.

That's human nature.

A good recruiter learns to listen beyond the words, and make sure the concern behind the question gets a straight answer.

Because candidates aren't just looking for information.

They're deciding whether they can trust the opportunity.

And sometimes, the best recruiter response is simply:

“That's a fair question. Let me find out.”

That's not a weakness.

That's good recruiting.

📝 FINAL THOUGHTS 📝

Candidates aren't trying to

trick recruiters with hidden questions.

They're trying to make one of the biggest career decisions

they can make with the information they have.

So the next time a candidate asks a question,

don't just listen to the words.

Listen for the concern behind them.

Because sometimes...

the question behind the question is the real question.
