[đź’‚ Saving Private Simon - Episode #004] When a Candidate Is Too Good for the Job

"Real Stories. Real Conversations. Real Lessons."

Every recruiter has stories.

These are mine.

Real conversations with candidates, clients, and hiring managers shared with identities changed, but lessons preserved.

🤔 When a Candidate Is Too Good for the Job

“Simon, I really like him. But I'm worried he's too good for this job.”

I paused for a moment.

Too good?

Isn't that what every hiring manager wants?

Apparently, not always.

The candidate had almost everything the company was looking for.

  • Strong experience

  • Relevant industry and functional background

  • A proven track record

  • Good communication skills

  • Bilingual in Korean and English

  • A friendly and professional appearance

On paper, he looked like an excellent fit.

But there was one problem.

He had significantly more experience than the role required.

And that created a completely different set of questions.

"Will he be challenged?"

"Will he be satisfied with the role?"

"Will he stay if a bigger opportunity comes along?"

The question was no longer:

“Can he do the job?”

It was:

“Why would he want this job?”

## đź’° It's Not Always About Salary

When a candidate is overqualified, people often assume the main concern is compensation.

Sometimes it is.

But I've found that the bigger concern is often motivation.

A candidate may be willing to accept the salary.

But what about the scope?

The influence?

The opportunity to grow?

If the role is a step down in responsibility, the company needs to understand why the candidate is genuinely interested.

Otherwise, everyone may be worried about the same thing:

"What happens when the next opportunity comes along?"

🎯 The Lesson for Candidates

If you're applying for a role that looks smaller than your current position, don't assume your experience will automatically work in your favor.

You may actually need to explain your motivation more clearly than a less experienced candidate.

Be ready to answer three simple questions:

"Why this role?"

"Why this company?"

"Why now?"

The more experienced you are, the more important these answers become.

🏢 The Lesson for Companies

Don't reject a candidate simply because they look “too good” on paper.

Instead, ask questions.

"What is motivating them to make this move?"

"What are they looking for at this stage of their career?"

And most importantly, "What would make them want to stay?"

Sometimes, the candidate who looks overqualified on paper may actually be the person who brings exactly what the company needs.

The key is understanding why they want the role, not just whether they can do it.

đź’‚ What a Recruiter Should Do

This is where I believe a good recruiter adds real value.

It's not enough to tell the client:

“He's a great candidate.”

The recruiter needs to explain the story behind the move.

Why is this person interested?

Why now?

What are they looking for that they don't have today?

Maybe they're moving into a new industry.

Maybe they want broader exposure.

Maybe they value stability more than title.

Or maybe, after years of managing large teams, they're simply looking for a different kind of challenge.

Those details don't appear on a resume.

But they can make the difference between “too senior” and “exactly right.”

📝 FINAL THOUGHTS 📝

So...

Is a candidate ever too good for the job?

Sometimes.

But being overqualified isn't necessarily the problem.

The real question is whether the opportunity makes sense for both sides.

Not “Can this person do the job?"

But “Will this job be right for this person?”

Because sometimes,

the strongest candidate isn't the one with the most experience.

It's the one whose next move makes the most sense.
