Many companies spend hours interviewing candidates, yet spend less than five minutes providing meaningful feedback.
Sometimes, the feedback is simply:
"Not a fit."
"Communication wasn't strong enough."
Sometimes, there is no feedback at all unless the recruiter asks for it.
While these comments may seem sufficient internally, they rarely provide enough information to explain the decision properly or improve the next search.
As recruiters, we represent the hiring company throughout the hiring process. We can't simply tell candidates that the hiring team didn't provide enough feedback. Instead, we do our best to explain the decision professionally and constructively. Even with the best intentions, our explanation may not fully reflect what the hiring team actually meant.
When that happens, everyone loses, the recruiter, the candidate, and ultimately, your company.
âť“ Why It Matters
Many companies see interview feedback as the end of the hiring process.
It isn't.
Good feedback is the beginning of a better search, a better candidate experience, and a stronger employer brand.
And it usually takes no more than five thoughtful minutes.
👍 Why Recruiters Need Better Feedback
Every interview teaches us something, not just about the candidate, but about your expectations.
The better we understand what you're looking for, the better we can refine the search, recalibrate the shortlist, and present candidates who are much closer to the profile you need.
Better feedback creates better shortlists
Better shortlists lead to better hiring
🤷 Why Candidates Deserve Better Feedback
Every time we interview a candidate, we ask a simple question:
"When was your last job interview, and what feedback did you receive?
Surprisingly, one of the most common answers we hear is:
"I didn't receive any feedback."
Most candidates don't expect a detailed report.
They simply want to understand why they weren't selected and what they can improve for the next opportunity.
Constructive feedback gives them that clarity.
It turns rejection into a learning opportunity and often leaves candidates with a positive impression of your company—even without an offer.
🏢 Why Your Employer Brand Benefits
Every interview shapes your employer brand.
Candidates remember how they were treated, especially after the interview is over.
They share those experiences with colleagues, friends, and professional networks.
Some become future applicants.
Some become future customers.
Some may even become future hiring managers.
Five thoughtful minutes of feedback can leave a lasting impression that benefits your company long after the hiring process ends.
📝 FINAL THOUGHTS 📝
Interview feedback does far more than explain a hiring decision.
It helps recruiters improve the search.
It helps candidates learn and grow.
And it strengthens your employer brand.
Many companies invest hours interviewing candidates.
Investing five more minutes in meaningful feedback
may be one of the smartest investments
you can make in your hiring process.
